How Choosing the Right Technology for your Enterprise IT is like Finding a Mate

Plenty of Fish in the Sea

In computing vernacular, we are in the fourth-generation of enterprise infrastructure. In previous generations, large technology vendors fought fierce wars to occupy an enterprise’s technology stack. These were expensive battles, and only a few large technology companies such as Microsoft, HP, Oracle and IBM had the resources to compete. How different the world is today. Enterprise boundaries are dropping, and the barriers to entry for enterprise infrastructure vendors are dropping even faster. Which for you as a company means you have the blessing of many more options, and the curse of having to do A LOT more research before you can make the right choice.

In social vernacular, we are in generation Y and Z – or the Millennials. Where previous generations were constrained by geographical boundaries, and communication was tied to the rotary phone and fax machines. Members of this generation are highly connected, having lifelong use of communication technologies like the web, mobile phones, and geolocation dating apps. The world is at our fingertips, and the world is abundant! For you as a person looking for the perfect mate, living in a more connected world and having plenty of resources to assist you makes this a great time to be single and searching.

Given all this choice, how do you know when you’ve found “the one”?

The Travel Test

I’m sure you’ve heard it many times before. Traveling with your new partner or friend will either make or break the relationship. Think about it, you’re spending 24/7 with the person, in both stressful and exciting environments. Does the person complain when they get sore from walking too much? What if you want to go to Oktoberfest, and your partner wants to visit Neuschwanstein Castle? Traveling together will also be a good indicator of how comfortable you are around each other, and whether or not you can put up with his or her irritating habits.

Bringing it back to choosing the right IT vendor or solutions provider for your enterprise, many companies offer trial products to take you on a little exploration of what it will be like to have that particular technology in your environment. Some of these trial products do have limitations, however, and may even come with a cost.

WARNING – If your not into shameless plugs continue reading the next paragraph: Faktor11 provides a hosted fully-loaded – free trial offering of the Moka5 virtualization technology aptly named the F11 Flight Test, to allow for an easy plug-and-play experience. Consumable enterprise software at your finger tips. Mirror your corporate environment with the added benefit of a F11 tech resource dedicated to your experience to get a better sense of whether or not we’re a good-match!

Family and Friends

Does your mate get along well with your friends and family? Does that new technology work seamlessly with your existing infrastructure? This point matters a lot. A family that plays together, stays together. When all parties are complimentary, it just makes for a more peaceful and pleasant ride, which is ultimately what makes this life fun, fulfilling and functional.

Bringing out the Best

So you’ve invested millions on your IT ecosystem. As an entity, it works well, but by adding a little something extra, it could work great. You don’t want to lose what you have, you want to make it better. Just so, you want to love your partner just as they are (and vice-versa), and also bring out the best in each other. You want a technology (or a mate) to help you grow and help you become the fullest of your potential. Not send you through a whirlwind of confusion, uncertainty, and fear. Someone to help lift you up. Technology to help unleash the power of your enterprise investment. Not deplete your resources.

Happily Ever After

We’ve all been exposed over and over to romantic stories from movies, books, and TV – and the story always ends when the romantic partners finally get together and live happily ever after. In actuality, this is when the real relationship story begins. Similarly, many technology solutions claim to solve all your problems and promise the world, but deliver an atlas.

Satisfying and long lasting relationships do take some work, and tweaking as time goes on. One of our core values as a company is full transparency and effective communication. The story never ends with the sale, or the transaction. We know communication is the hallmark of a long-term healthy relationship, so we’re always open to listen and not only find the best solution for you, but customize or tweak it along the way to change with your ever changing organization.
